What are you doing here? You should be practicing! No, I should be.
The most demanding love of my life, that wonderful viola I’ve been so lucky to be able to play for so many years, has been mostly resident in London since last September. The climate isn’t Venetian, but nor is it Chicago-an where my instrument has been for most of the time since 2005. So today I have taken it to “hospital” for a proper check-up and to have it prepared for a summer, or at least a July, of much-closer-to-Venice concerts…. in Casalmaggiore, that simply wonderful northern Italian market town where every year except one since 2002 I have been fortunate to spend July. The exception? 2013. That summer I studied for and passed three exams for the American Sailing Association. Now THAT’s a good way of forgetting the viola for a bit….
In another entry I’m going to write down what I’ve found remarkable about trying to adjust and get the very best out of Tertis’ magnificent viola.
